Alexander Rice is elected mayor of Boston.

December 10, 1855

Rice (R and Citizens Party), with 7,401 votes, defeats Nathaniel Shurtleff (Know Nothing), with 5,800, and others. He lives at 18 Union Park. The first Republican mayor of Boston, Rice is Inaugurated on January 7, 1856. It is during his administration that much of the South End is developed.
